Monitored Dosage Systems (MDS) are a well-known element of modern community pharmacy, particularly for patients managing multiple or complex medicines. Jagdeep Dosanjh, Executive Director at Medicine Drop in Derby, has long been a vocal champion for their adoption, guided by a firmly held belief that patients naturally gravitate toward what brings clarity, confidence, and control.
“What we’ve consistently seen is that blister packs remain the most organised and efficient way for many patients to manage their medicines.” Explains Jagdeep. “I’m a big advocate for anything that helps patients stay in control and check their medications easily.”
Venalink’s monitored dosage systems are designed to provide a simple, structured, system that supports patients in taking the right medicine at the right time. According to Jagdeep, the impact goes beyond convenience. “One of the most striking things we hear from patients and carers is, ‘this is a lifesaver,’ or ‘this has given me peace of mind.’” Particularly, he recounts a memorable call with a carer organising medication for a family member. “They would spend every Sunday night organising a relative’s weekly medication. Using MDS has saved them several hours each week, time they can now spend socially with their relative instead. We frequently make support calls, and the feedback we get is that blister packs are a huge reassurance.”
At Medicine Drop, MDS is an integral part of the pharmacy’s service model. Jagdeep and his team work closely with patients, GPs, care homes, and families to ensure systems are used appropriately and safely.
“We organise blister packs for an entire month’s supply of medication. Compared with managing multiple boxed medicines, where something inevitably runs out at a different time to another item, it’s a huge difference. What we’re providing is reassurance, removing that anxiety that can come with juggling multiple prescriptions or running out.”
As community pharmacies take on expanding clinical responsibilities, Jagdeep believes MDS will remain an important factor in helping patients navigate their adherence. “I’ve seen firsthand the transformation, going from multiple containers and boxes to a blister pack, the control and reassurance that comes with it.
